Here are some early signs to look out for if you think your child may have dyslexia;
The following check-list gives just some examples of the range of symptoms to help you decide so please tick the boxes for anything that seems familiar:
Your child is not achieving what would be expected when otherwise bright and intelligent
There is someone in the immediate family who has had similar problems
Your child’s behaviour changes shortly after starting Primary school e.g. less outgoing, seems less confident or starts to become more moody, disruptive and argumentative
There are short-term memory problems where the child finds it hard to remember information
Considered a ‘clumsy’ child for often bumping into things, tripping, spilling things or falling over
They have difficulties with catching or kicking a ball, riding a bike, skipping or dancing
Difficulties with reading and spelling
Has to re-read text several times before they understand it
Skips lines in text or has to use a ruler or finger to keep their place on the page
They confuse certain letters e.g. p and q or b and
Take longer than their classmates to do written work
Find it hard to write between the lines on a page
Lack concentration and focus
Are often told off in class for not listening or paying attention
Frequently angle their head on one side to listen to you
Turn their book or writing pad at an angle to read or write
Start to show signs of being uncomfortable having to go to school or when doing homework
Try using avoidance tactics to get out of going to school e.g. lie about feeling ill
Complain of frequent sometimes severe headaches
